"The Growing Popularity of Children’s Decor " posted by majia1
Posted on 2008-06-23 07:54:55 |
Children s Design(ARA) - The market for youth furnishings and décor hasrecently experienced a surge in popularity and profitability.Barbara Schmidt, a nationally recognized interior style consultantwhose work has appeared in “In Style,” “ElleDécor,” “Architectural Digest” and“Metropolitan Home,” attributes the rise in popularityto children’s increased awareness of interior design andtheir resulting desire to play an active role in the look of theirrooms. “Because of the Internet and channels like HGTV, kids aremore design-savvy now,” says Schmidt. “They want tocreate their own spaces.” Parents are also influencing the market’s increasedpopularity. “A child’s bedroom is another space parentscan have fun with, revisiting their own childhoods,” saysSchmidt. “You can use dramatic colors you wouldn’t beable to use in everyday décor.” A prominent trend in youth décor is personalization –through throw pillows, monograms and framed art. “In additionto displaying a child’s own works of art, personalized wallhangings can teach children about the world around them, buildanticipation for future events and preserve memories andmilestones,” says Schmidt. She offers several suggestions forusing framed art, photography and more to add personality to achild’s bedroom. * A child’s own artwork is the most unique and personal pieceyou can frame. “It’s also a great way to keep thosememorable works of art from getting lost in the shuffle,”says Schmidt. * “Let your child be a part of the design process by givingthem a job to do,” she adds. “Something like allowingthem to pick out the colors of custom matboard can make them feellike they’re taking part in designing their own personalspace.” * “Frame pictures of places visited and maps to teach kidsabout the world around them,” suggests Schmidt. “Notonly is it exciting for them – it will open up a whole newplace in their imagination.” * “Combine three-dimensional mementos, such as a firsthomerun ball, team jerseys, medals and certificates with photos tocommemorate important youth sporting events,” says Schmidt.“With their creative eye and professional products, customframers can help create a well-organized and stylishgrouping.” When it comes to preserving a special memory for your child, makesure you pick custom framing materials you can count on to protectthose cherished pieces, like Crescent’s 100 percent cottonRagMat matboard. It’s guaranteed safe next to any artwork,so you know that special keepsake, whether it’s a first placeribbon or your child’s art class masterpiece, will lastforever. It’s also a good idea to incorporate color trends. “Forgirls, the classic pinks and purples are mixed with white thisyear, and for boys, brown and green have replaced the standard navyand red,” Schmidt says. She also suggests picking neutralframes, such as woods and whites, to avoid having to replace themif the room’s design changes. “Adding new artwork andgetting more creative with what you frame is the perfect way to letthe room grow with the child.” For more information about professional custom framing, visitwww.crescentcardboard.com or contact a professional custom framerin your area.

Design For WomenCoffee Mug Connections section, biker hats are in the Cap Standsection, and specialized items (including bumper stickers)according to occupations are in the Occupations & Lifestylessection. The design has already won approval of key members in acouple of women riders' clubs and word is spreading fast. Steamy already had a design for women in mind. After contact from amember of Women On Wheels motorcycle club, he decided to move hisdeadline up. Then, the president of Cycle Sisters asked for thedesign without lettering (as seen in the selection seen in theOccupations & Lifestyles section, eg: Biker-Accountant,Biker-Banker. Biker-Teacher, etc). Even though there is absolutelynothing wrong with the term Biker Chick, Steamy decided to titlethe design Steamy's Woman Biker. These women are independent, ridetheir own motorcycles, and deserve every bit of respect equal tomen riders.

"K0nit So Fine by Myers, Grutzeck, and Sulcoski " posted by majia1

cable knit sweatersKnit So Fine: Designs with Skinny Yarn , written by Lisa R. Myers, Laura Grutzeck, and Carol Sulcoski, isa knitting book dedicated to patterns knit with skinny yarns– in this book, anything finer than a worsted weight.Knitting with lightweight yarns have many advantages. They have abetter fit, a nicer drape, and a more streamlined look. The book outlines other advantages to light weight yarns. They aremore versatile – try knitting a lace shawl or a pair of sockswith bulky yarn. Similarly, a camisole made of a thin cotton willbe far more summer-appropriate than a thicker yarn. The authorsalso give tips for working with delicate yarns, substituting yarns, and essential tools that will make working with fine yarns easier. The projects are just what you would expect from a book advocatingstylish, feminine designs. Choice designs: the Cowlneck Pullover, which offers a new spin on a the classic drapey neckline. TheDolman Top has a deep V-neck and body shape that is somehow bothbig and cozy as well as figure-flattering. The Wrap Dress, myfavorite from the book, is a traditional style, but one that looksgood on anyone, and is a must-have in any wardrobe. The TravelingStitch Legwarmers are a bit unconventional -- leg warmers that aren’t scrunched down so you can see the intricate cable stitching -- butthey sure are beautiful. The Kimono Top has a beautifulbutterfly-stitch and an easy-to-wear style that is very versatile. Like any knitting book, the projects aren’t all winners. TheRibby Vest is boring – and who wears sweater vests anymore? The Skater Sweater is odd – a short-sleeved, scoop-necksweater knitted to look like a longer-sleeved, higher-neck sweateris underneath (when in reality, it is just extra knitted bits sewnon to the sleeves and neck). It’s faux-layering, and justlooks awkward. Knit So Fine is not for beginners. Slender yarn takes longer to knit, so youmust have some patience and persevere. Advanced techniques, such asselvedge stitching, are also required. But it is well worth it.
